Somewhere along the way, props got a bad reputation — as if reaching for a block meant you weren't “advanced” enough. Let's throw that idea out completely. Props aren't training wheels. They're the quiet secret of every practitioner who moves with ease instead of strain, who rests instead of forces. They meet your body exactly where it is today — and honestly? They make the whole thing feel so much better.

Start here: two cork blocks
If you buy one thing, buy blocks. They gently “bring the floor closer,” so instead of straining to reach, you soften into good alignment. Hand not quite touching the floor in triangle? Block. Craving a blissful supported bridge? Block under the sacrum. Tight hips in a seated fold? Sit on one. Cork ones stay firm and steady where foam tends to slip and squish — two of them will carry your whole practice.
A strap: your arms, extended
When flexibility is still a work in progress (and for most of us, it always is), a strap becomes a patient extension of your arms. Loop it around your feet in a forward fold, use it to open tight shoulders, or hold a bound pose without forcing the reach. No strain, no ego — just space to grow into.
A bolster: permission to rest
If there's one prop that feels like a warm hug, it's the bolster. Slide it under your spine and your chest opens; tuck it under your knees in savasana and your whole body finally lets go. Restorative yoga is where your nervous system truly exhales — and the bolster is what makes it possible.

And a few small joys
A meditation cushion lifts your hips so sitting feels effortless instead of achy. A lavender eye pillow turns the final rest into something you actually crave. A soft blanket quietly does a hundred jobs — warmth, support, comfort.
So how much do you really need?
Begin with two blocks and a strap — they unlock almost everything. Add a bolster and cushion when you're ready to fall in love with restorative and meditation. Build slowly. Let each piece earn its place. Your practice space should feel like calm, never clutter.
