What to Wear to Reformer Pilates (And the One Thing That Ruins Every Outfit)

Reformer is one of the only workouts where your instructor needs to see your alignment — which means baggy, mid-rise, or loose-knit anything quietly works against you the whole class. Here's what actually holds up on the carriage.

Why Does Outfit Choice Matter So Much for Reformer?

Unlike a regular gym session, reformer Pilates has you lying down, kneeling, seated, and standing — often within the same minute. The carriage moves under you, straps loop around your hands and feet, and your instructor is watching your hips and shoulders to correct form. Loose tops flip up during supine work. Mid-rise leggings roll down the second you fold forward. Bulky seams dig in when you're lying flat on the carriage pad for ten minutes straight. None of this is about looking a certain way — it's about whether your clothing disappears or distracts for the full 50 minutes.

Why Do Leggings Roll Down Mid-Class Specifically?

It's almost never the rise height — it's the waistband construction. A mid-rise or high-rise waistband made from thin, folded-over fabric with light elastic will roll the second you bend forward, kneel, or sit back on your heels — all of which happen constantly on the reformer. What actually stays put is a wide, reinforced waistband that holds its own shape independently of the leg fabric, so it doesn't migrate when the rest of the legging stretches.

This is also why "high-waisted" on a product label doesn't guarantee anything. Plenty of high-rise leggings still roll, because the rise is high but the waistband itself is thin. The two are not the same thing.

What Should You Actually Wear to Reformer Pilates?

1. Full-length or 7/8 leggings with a real waistband.
Skip anything mid-rise. A wide, engineered waistband stays at your natural waist through the entire class — warm-up to footwork to the last stretch.

2. A fitted top, not a loose one.
Loose t-shirts and oversized tanks ride up the instant you lie back, which happens early and often in reformer. A fitted, slightly cropped or longline top stays in place and lets your instructor actually see your alignment.

3. Seamless construction over cut-and-sew.
Traditional leggings have seams at the inner thigh and along the back — exactly where you're lying directly on the carriage pad. Seamless knit removes that pressure point entirely, which matters a lot more on reformer than on a yoga mat.

4. Grip socks, always.
Bare feet and regular socks both slip on the carriage and footbar. Grip socks aren't optional at almost any reformer studio — bring your own or buy a pair at reception.

What Should You Avoid Wearing?

  • Baggy joggers or shorts — bulky on the carriage, hides your alignment from the instructor, can snag on springs.
  • Mid-rise anything — it will roll the first time you fold forward.
  • Heavy jewelry — rings, bracelets, and long necklaces catch on straps.
  • Shoes or sneakers — reformer is grip-socks-only; shoes damage the carriage and reduce foot feedback.

The YOHA Reformer-Ready Picks

Every YOHA legging is built around the same engineered, non-rolling waistband and seamless knit — the difference is just silhouette and coverage.

Seamless High-Waisted Leggings — full-length, firm compression, zero seams where you're lying on the carriage. The default reformer choice.

V-Shape Scrunch Leggings — same non-roll waistband, slightly lighter compression. Good for longer or heated reformer classes.

Pair either with a fitted top from the sports bras & active tops collection — anything snug enough to stay put when you lie back.

The Bottom Line

Reformer Pilates is one of the few workouts where your outfit either disappears or distracts — there's no in-between. Get the waistband and the seams right, and you stop thinking about your clothes by the warm-up. Get them wrong, and you're adjusting leggings through the entire class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you wear shorts to reformer Pilates?
You can if they're fitted, but most people end up adjusting them constantly during kneeling and lying positions. Full-length or 7/8 leggings are the more reliable choice.

Do you need special socks for reformer Pilates?
Yes. Grip socks are required at nearly every reformer studio — the carriage and footbar are too slippery for bare feet or regular socks.

Why do my leggings always roll down during Pilates?
It's the waistband, not the rise height. A thin, folded-elastic waistband rolls under movement no matter how high it sits. A wide, reinforced waistband holds position through bending, kneeling, and lying down.
